SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES // SALTA

Route: 362 km
Departure: 07.30 am
Length: 12 hours aprox.

Leaving Salta though the national road Nº 51, passing Campo Quijano known as El Portal de los Andes, previous at the great ‘El Toro’ Gorge.

We’ll have the company from the famous Belgrano line rails (Train to the Clouds) the most part of our trip, letting us appreciate some of the wonderful works from Maury Engineer. Our first stop is Santa Rosa de Tastil, one of the most important pre-Incaic places in the zone, with 2000 residents.

Arriving to San Antonio de los Cobres in the puna, we will find a typical miner and craftsmen town which trades its regional products. The handicrafts made of sheep or llama wool is the main working source from the local women. It has been an ancient tradition going on from generation to generation. It’s also known for its legendary Barracán, a thick fabric made of sheep or llama wool containing a natural colour weave, prevailing white, black and brown. Moving on to the Polvorilla, we can find the impressive viaduct crossing the train to the clouds. Return to Salta taking the same road.
